Working alongside Rob Lindsay (BRB) we curated 3 collections of works, inspired by the plots of major narrative works in the repertory of BRB, created by professional designers in and around the UK. The majority of contributors had never been to a ballet before and the project aims to introduce the ballet to new audiences, encouraging the designers to see the productions as a story, rather than a ballet. The first project launched in 2011, with 27 designers and illustrators creating artwork based upon the tale of toymaker Doctor Coppélius, and his attempts to breathe life into his most prized creation - Coppélia. The brief given to the contributors (including myself) did not require them to present Coppélia as a ballet, only that ideally, they include some reference to BRB. Production images were available, but not initially provided in an attempt to keep the brief as unprescriptive as possible. The collection launched at the Hippodrome on Monday 13th June '11 and was exhibited at the Mailbox in June '12 as part of the Birmingham Made Me Design EXPO.
