Birmingham Repertory Theatre’s history is rich and varied; a place of significance, not only to theatre-lovers, but to academics and the entire theatre industry. Incredible writers, directors, designers, actors, photographers, wardrobe, set-builders, stage crew, critics and audiences have all contributed to a theatre now steeped in history, and who have made The REP what it is today.
The REP100 exhibition was very much about bringing the theatre’s heritage to life through new digital archives, audio tours and productions. I was honoured to be asked to design an illustrated map for the celebration which drew upon inspiration from the archive; highlighting key people and locations that have all contributed to 100 years of The REP.
Spanning 5.5metres of wall in The Rep foyer, the hand drawn illustrated map highlights the global relationships and worldwide reach of the theatre, positioning Birmingham at its epicentre. We created exhibition literature, postcards, bookmarks and posters to accompany the design, allowing visitors to take a piece of the map home with them!
